Free Ribosomes
Free ribosomes can move about anywhere in the cytosol, however are excluded from entering the cell nucleus and other organelles. Proteins that are formed from free ribosomes are released into the cytosol for use within the cell. The cytosol contains high concentrations of glutathione, making it a reducing environment. Proteins containing disulfide bonds (formed from oxidized cysteine residues) are unable to be produced in the cytosol.
