Lysosomes
Lysosomes are bag-like membranes that contain hydrolytic enzymes from the Golgi or ER. The membrane allows the lysosomes to maintain an acidic pH inside (around 5.0) as compared to the neutral pH outside (around 7.4). These enzymes and the acidic inside help the lysosome with its purpose to digest food, microorganisms, and organelles. If lysosomes don’t have all of the enzymes they need it can result in genetic diseases, such as Tay-Sachs disease.
