Intermediate Filaments
Intermediate filaments are larger than microfilaments measuring about 10 nm in diameter, thus explaining their heightened stability in comparison to actin. Like the function of microfilaments, intermediate filaments function in the maintenance of cell shape via the tension induced. Intermediate filaments also organize the internal structure of the cell by anchoring organelles as well as functioning as structural components of the nuclear lamina. Other functions involving intermediate structure includes cell-cell and cell-matrix junctions.
